Roll cage material? CDS tubing. What is it called in German?

  • Guys I need a little help I need to get some CDS tubing (cold drawn seamless) to add a harness bar to my cage. Now I could wait till I am back in the UK get some or I can ask a metal shop here. But I want to make sure I ask for the correct stuff.

Any help advise or links (not google translate as it can't manage with this ;) ) will be much appreciated.

  • Hi Nick,

CDS tube is called in Germany "nahtlos gezogenes Präzisionsstahlrohr"

    Hope this helps:smile:

    Cheers

  • Hi,

CDS means a standard carbon steel and a specification like ST52-3. To add a harness bar you will need something like 38x2.5 or bigger. The other possibility is a so called airplane steel. If your cage is manufactured from T45 you will need a CROMO4 tube.

    Best regards

Yes Cold Drawn Steel tube as opposed to ERW tube. Which is welded tube. Not suitable for cage material.
Your sizing is OK though but as the tubs are 42mm with a 50mm main hoop I am looking fir upto 42mm with a 2mm wall but was planing on a 38mm with a 2.5mm wall. The first place I have tried here had 40mm with a 3mm wall which is a bit thicker than I want.

I can get what I want from the supplier back in the UK. that will be weeks away.

Cheers for the help so far.

  • Hi,

yes the only UK supplier to furnish CROMO tubes is Custom Cages. It seems to be a quality problem. Myself, I just completed a RollCentre for a historic car with FIA papers with tubes for a harness bar from this address http://www.titus-automotive.de/ . But I am not sure if he just want to deliver the tubes. You may ask.

    Best.

  • just to precise. All cage tubes are made from cold drawn seamless steel. The difference is the quality of the steel. If the regulations are speaking from cold drawn seamless, they mean a minimal quality like FE45. The other way is using CROMO steel to get a lighter cage, but this needs a special certification. For example Wiechers or Custom cages or as well Titus are offering both for the MINI.

  • Agreed. But in some form of motor sport in the UK there was not that requirement.

Anyway I have managed to get hold of the latest rules and regs and 38x2.5mm is acceptable and the rollcage provider has it available.

Might have to re specify with any German metal suppliers I talk to.

Thanks for your info. It is greatly appreciated.
